The Mid-Atlantic Simulation of the United Nations (MASUN) 2009

The Mid-Atlantic Simulation of the United Nations (MASUN) is the pride and joy of George Mason Model UN. Every spring, we host hundreds of high school students to discuss the pressing international policy issues of the day. Students become fully engaged representing various countries and individuals, immersing themselves in the international policy arena.

Dear Model UN Sponsor,

George Mason University Model United Nations is truly excited to invite you to the 18th annual Mid-Atlantic Simulation of the United Nations (MASUN) conference, to be held February 20th-21st, 2009 on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University.

A brand-new Secretariat and I have been working for months to create a Model United Nations conference that is one-of-a-kind; our staff and committees are dedicated to recreating the best aspects of the college MUN experience in a format ideal for high school students.

This year, we will offer 10 unique committees at all skill levels:

  • Beginner – Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural (SOCHUM)
  • Beginner – United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
  • Intermediate – African Union
  • Intermediate – United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs
  • Intermediate – National Football League Annual Meeting
  • Intermediate – Reformed United Nations Security Council
  • Advanced – Department of Defense (joint crisis)
  • Advanced – Department of State (joint crisis)
  • Advanced – 1962 Presidium of the Supreme Soviet
  • Advanced – International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA)
  • NOTE: The committee list has been expanded since this letter was posted; you can find the most up-to-date list at http://mun.gmu.edu/MASUN/committees/.

As you can see, we hope that the variety and breadth of our committees ensures that every delegate can participate in engaging international policy debate in committees or topics not typically presented at the high school level.

Registration is now open at http://mun.gmu.edu/MASUN/register/.  Regular registration is $30 per school, $30 per delegate, and closes December 15th, 2008 (school fee received by December 19th, 2008, delegate fees received by February 6th, 2009).  Late registration is $40 per school, $40 per delegate, and closes February 6th, 2009 (all fees received by February 6th, 2009).  Because the total number of delegates is fixed this year, we strongly encourage you to register as soon as possible; schools will also be assigned country requests on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Our staff preparations are well underway to make certain that MASUN 2009 will be a thoroughly engaging experience for your students.  I encourage you to visit our website at http://mun.gmu.edu/MASUN/ for more details about the conference.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or telephone; we are committed to working with you and your delegates to ensure that MASUN 2009 is an exciting, memorable, and insightful experience.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you and your school this February!
