Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Questions about MASUN 2009?  You’ve come to the right place!  If, even after reading through the below questions, your particular inquiry has not been addressed, please feel free to contact us.  Thanks and we look forward to seeing you at MASUN ‘09!

When/where is MASUN 2009?

MASUN 2009 will be held on Friday, February 20th and Saturday, February 21st (schedule).  The conference will be hosted on the Fairfax Campus of George Mason University (4400 University Dr, Fairfax, VA 22030).

Will food be provided?

Yes!  On Saturday, lunch will be provided for all delegates, faculty sponsors, and volunteers at GMU’s brand-new $12 million environmentally responsible dining facility, Southside.  This buffet-style location with 7 different self-contained mini-restaurants has a wide variety of quality food for everyone, including a multitude of vegetarian options.Snacks and refreshments will also be made available for a fee during the weekend of the conference.

Is there an official conference hotel?

For delegates seeking accommodations the weekend of the conference, we recommend consulting George Mason University’s official list of nearby hotels here: http://www.gmu.edu/welcome/hotel.html.  While there is not an official conference hotel, we highly recommend the Best Western located on Chain Bridge Rd (first on the previously linked list) for its value and proximity to campus.  Depending on how many delegates we have staying at this location, we may decide to have a shuttle running from the hotel to campus during the weekend of the conference — more information about this will be forthcoming closer to the date of the conference..

How experienced are chairs at MASUN 2009?

The brand-new MASUN secretariat has placed a significant emphasis on ensuring chair quality.  All of our chairs have prior experience chairing at the high school level and will further undergo a rigorous 4-week boot camp preceding the conference to ensure that they are familiar with MASUN 2009 rules and ready to answer any questions that may come up.

Are laptops allowed in committee?

In order to ensure parity among delegates, laptops are NOT allowed at MASUN 2009.  Furthermore, delegates will not be allowed to type working papers or draft resolutions outside of committee (typing staff will be working around the clock to ensure prompt turn-around time).

Are pre-written draft resolutions allowed?

Delegates are ABSOLUTELY NOT ALLOWED to bring pre-written draft resolutions to the conference.  Model United Nations encourages diplomacy and compromise, and pre-written resolutions violate this principle.  Delegates found to have done so will be removed from awards contention and their sponsors will be immediately notified.

How long will it take to get draft resolutions typed and returned to committee?

Too often, it simply takes too long once a working paper has been submitted to typing staff before returning to committee.  The MASUN Secretariat has worked with our typing staff to ensure that all draft resolutions are returned within 30 minutes or less once submitted.  All resolutions submitted by the close of Session I or Session II will be returned at the beginning of the next debate Session.
